Place the ice cream base into your ice cream maker bowl, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the ice cream base into the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the grainy bits. Place the mixture into a blender or stick blender and purée till smooth. Add in the mashed ube and mix till completely incorporated. In a large sauce pot, heat the sugar and milks over medium-low heat till just-summering. If your ube is uncooked (as most are in the package) steam it in a double boiler for about 20-30 minutes.Ĭarefully remove the cooked ube and mash it with a fork. (*Cook’s Note: Ube/grated purple yam can be found at your local Asian market.) Here’s my take on Filipino halo-halo, with homemade ube ice cream and Spanish-style flan!ġ6 ounces (1 package) ube, grated purple yam* I wanted to recreate the halo-halo that reminds me of the ones I had at Magic Wok with my family. I quickly added it to my basket and enjoyed it at home. I haven’t had legit halo-halo in a few years, but during a recent trip to the local Asian market, I stumbled upon a quart of Magnolia’s Ube ice cream. The key to enjoying halo-halo to its fullest is doing exactly what its name asks: mix! And mix! Use a long spoon to mix all the layers of ingredients together. And it’s delicious.Īlone the beans, milk, ice cream, flan, shaved ice, and chunks of jackfruit and various jellies, are odd, but once mix-mixed, the blend of savory, sweet, creamy, caramel and sometimes tangy work perfectly well together. The standout part of halo-halo is the bright purple scoop of ice cream gracing the top of the ice-cold glass, called ube, a naturally-hued purple yam. The Devour Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese tastes great but it’s a little soggy.

That would be fine for a meal that left us feeling stuffed, but we were still hungry after eating this sandwich. One sandwich has 480 calories (150 from fat). This should come as no surprise to anyone who’s familiar with Devour’s frozen meals, but this is no low-calorie affair. These aren’t your itty-bitty little bits either, you’ll find substantial pieces of both in between the slices of bread. It has this smokey flavor to it, which enhances the beef phenomenally well.Īdded into the mix are fire-roasted green peppers and caramelized onions. That means it’s a gooey sauce that also has some stretchiness - it’s the best of both cheese worlds. Dear lord, what can we even say about this cheese sauce? The sauce itself is a cheddar sauce, but it has a blend of cheddar, mozzarella, and provolone in it as well. We only wish there were more of it.Īnd the cheese sauce. Don’t expect gristly, chewy meat this is perfection. This is real angus beef, and it’s fantastic - it’s rich in flavor and tender, so eating it is a pleasant experience. The bread stays dry around the very, very edges, but the rest of it will be moist and even a bit sticky.ĭevour wasn’t kidding around when it came to the beef, though. Now, we’ve mentioned this before, but when it comes to Devour’s microwavable sandwiches, the crisping trays don’t seem to do as much good as they do for some other frozen foods. Once you get this all set up, stick in the microwave for two minutes and 40 seconds. You can see in the photo above how well the box survived the process - its creases are crisp and its flat surfaces are left unbent. Sometimes, we find these sorts of contraptions to be difficult to work with, but this time we had no trouble tearing or folding the box. This sandwich comes with a crisping tray, so you can fold the box, set the crisping tray on it, then place the two halves of the sandwich on top of that.

Now, we promise we’ll stop getting sappy here because we’ve got business to attend to: today we’re checking out the Devour Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese, and boy are we ever excited to dive in. On one hand, we’re glad we get to try something new from Devour, but on the other, we know that every item review means there is one less evour item left for us to review. So it’s always a bit bittersweet to review something we haven’t tried before.
